How to Set an Intention for the Month

We are constantly faced with things we have to DO. Our lives are consistently filled with places we have to be, things we need to get done and plans we have to look forward to.

This month, I challenge you to focus on who you want to BE while doing all of those things.

Here’s what I mean:

I asked a client what her intention was for December 2016. Her initial answer was a bunch of things she had to get done in the month. I asked the same question, only worded it differently, “No, I’m not talking about what you have to get done. I’m talking about how you want to BE while doing all of those things?”. After a deep breath and some silence, she responded “I want to be a present mom and wife”.

Below are three of my favorite intentions to help get you thinking about what you would like your intention to be for this month.

Presence

This is a good intention for those of you who are total busybodies. You have so much on your plate you don’t even remember the color of the plate itself. While doing one thing, you’re thinking about the next thing you need to get done.
Here are some ways to be more present this month:

  • Check out this article from Psychology Today

  • Put a limit on your phone usage. “I won’t use my phone during meals” or my own personal limit: no phone after 10 pm or before 8 am.

  • Pick a time throughout the day to stop and reflect on what is going on around you.

Love

Ah, a completely cliche intention for the month of love. This intention is perfect for those in a relationship and wanting to pay extra attention to your relationship. It’s also perfect for those who are looking for love. How can an intention of love change your dating life?

Here are some ways to bring more love to your life this month:

  • Make a list of 100 things you love in your life right now

  • Write a love letter (this doesn’t have to be romantic! Friends want to feel the love too)

  • Reflect on your dating life after reading this article

Purpose

Ask yourself this every day this month: “What greater purpose was I fulfilling through my actions today?”

As for me, my intention for February is called “right now”. When I’m stuck or uncertain about something I will ask myself “What can I do about it right now?” and use small and timely actions to get the ball rolling again.

I’d love to hear what you come up with for you month! Enter your thoughts in the comments section below.
